Using Your Chimney Cleaning Kit

Removing the creosote from your chimney is a hard task, and takes a professional to do the dirty work. However, instead of calling for a professional to clean the dirt off the walls of your chimney, purchase a chimney cleaning kit so that you can clean it by yourself.

A chimney cleaning hit consists of different types of brushes that will be used to clean the inside of the chimney, and getting one for yourself is a cheap way of removing the creosote collecting inside your chimney. Unless the creosote is too tough to remove, cleaning your chimney using the necessary brushes is a great way of maintaining the performance of your fireplace.

However, before going your fireplace to clean the dirt off the chimney, be sure that you wear the safety goggles and face mask that is provided by the chimney cleaning kit. Also, place a tarpaulin cover in front of the fireplace to prevent the creosote from entering the room. Before climbing the roof to starting cleaning the chimney using the brushes from the kit, open the damper of the fireplace, so that you can collect and clean the creosote and other dirt on the fireplace. Arrange the rods for the chimney brush following the installation manual supplied by the retailer, or you may do this once you are already at the rooftop, depending on which would be more comfortable for you. Next, remove the cover of the chimney, and use a plunging motion for the brush to rid the chimney from the creosote, unless indicated otherwise by your manual. After removing the creosote, go back down to the fireplace to clean the flue using the brush that is also included in the kit. After doing this, now is the time to clean the fireplace of creosote that came from the chimney.

Cleaning the chimney using your chimney cleaning kit is a rather fulfilling experience, but unless you are an expert in chimney sweeping, do not expect to completely remove the dirt from your chimney. Hence, it is still always ideal to have a chimney sweeper check your chimney from removing glazed creosote and other maintenance problems. At best, your kit will be useful as a maintenance tool that would occasionally keep your fireplaces.
